I'm not smooth enough to pull off most of these capers without having to fire a shot. There are guys out there good enough, like Spade and Marlowe, but that's not me either. I got this for winning the first look on Good Reads. YAY me. Now I only choose the books that sounds interesting and I am SOOOO happy that I got this book. It is really good. And as you already know I don't give spoilers. Anyone who likes a little bit of history, a little bit of science fiction, and a lot of Private Investigatorship should read this book. Okay enough about me, lets get to the book. C.J. Fella writes in such a way that you either love or hate the characters, but the thing is, youCouldn't get through it. Kind of a male-fantasy story, with a lot of weird sexual stuff that I found off-putting. And I'm used to MCs getting beat up on, but this guy can't seem to ever do anything without getting his ass handed to him and seems to spend a lot of the book just recovering from his latest beating.
Let me start by saying that this was a Goodreads win. I have read a lot of detective books over the years. Wizard detectives, consulting detectives, British and American detectives, even on one memorable occasion a robot detective (The Automatic Detective by A. Lee Martinez, highly recommended). C.J. is a lifetime resident of Oregon's Willamette Valley, where he attended college and graduate school, and currently works as an auditor for his home state. Raised on classical literature, his interests turned to the radio serials of the early 1900's, and the pulp era. Inspired by Isaac Asimov, Mickey Spillane and Robert B. Parker, C.J. blended the science fiction and hard-boiled detectiveI haven't read a Detective novel that didn't include the supernatural in a while. I really enjoyed this book. This book is a sarcastically witty, steamy, and action packed ride.I admire they way the author used the "salt of the earth, working man", grit not only in the dialogue, but throughout every aspect of the writing.
