Description Conducive To Books A Decent Woman
Ponce, Puerto Rico, at the turn of the century: Ana BelĂ©n Opaku, an Afro-Cuban born into slavery, is a proud midwife with a tempestuous past. After testifying at an infanticide trial, Ana is forced to reveal a dark secret from her past, but continues to hide an even more sinister one. Pitted against the parish priest, Padre VicĂ©nte, and young DoctĂ³r HĂ©ctor Rivera, Ana must battle to preserve her twenty-five year career as the only midwife in La Playa.Serafina is a respectable young widow with two small children, who marries an older, wealthy merchant from a distinguished family. A crime against Serafina during her last pregnancy forever bonds her to Ana in an ill-conceived plan to avoid a scandal and preserve Serafina’s honor.
Set against the combustive backdrop of a chauvinistic society, where women are treated as possessions, A Decent Woman is the provocative story of these two women as they battle for their dignity and for love against the pain of betrayal and social change.

What a fascinating story! A Decent Woman takes the reader on a journey into the heat and steam of Puerto Rico in the early 1900s. Ana's life is joined to Serafina's, not simply when Ana brings Serafina's daughter into the world in the midst of a torrential rain, but through the secrets and crimes committed against women in this turn-of-the-last-century dramatic story. This is not an ordinary book. I know I have my guard up when I start to read a story where I know the twists and turns will be
A well-written book that combines well-researched history and an interesting story line. Eleanor has a lovely, lyrical writing style that draws you in. And her main character has a warmth and strength not often seen in female characters.
I am in love with Parker-Sapia's writing and the depth of her characters. Ana Belen is as indelible in A Decent Woman as Scout is in To Kill a Mockingbird. She is the woman that all good women want to be. Ana and Serafina simply come alive on the page. I find that when I put this book down at night, there's a twinge of sadness on the edges of my heart, because I have to leave this story until I can pick the book up again many hours later.Booktrope has hit the mark in literary publishing with
This book is not good I dont know why it has such a high rating. It had so much potential, but the plot is incoherent. Didnt finish.
After the terribly snotty Towers of Trebizond, I was prepared to fall in love with this book. Alas. The setting was fascinating, the main character had a great potential to be fascinating, the idea behind it was commendable, but the executionThere is really no plot, just a string of random things happening to Ana and to Serafina. This man comes and does bad stuff, then leaves, that man comes and does bad stuff and goes away, earthquakes happen, babies die, characters are introduced in a way that
2.5 stars. An Afro-Cuban woman, former slave, who is also a midwife, at turn of the 20th century Puerto Rico? Sounded fascinating. Disclaimer: I'm acquainted with the author via social media.I wanted to love it, or even like it a lot, but I struggled to read to the end. Ana, and her friend Serafina, could be great characters, but there isn't any STORY here, just a string of anecdotes. There is drama - hurricanes, earthquakes, murder trials, but there isn't a through line. I don't see where they
