A great ending for an even greater trilogy.Hope has left the Pirate Bane days behind her. She's now back in Bleak Hope where everything started, trying to find a semblance of inner piece. Hope's former crew is scattered across the Empire. Brigga Lin and Jilly are part of another pirate crew, Alash is secluded in an island, and none knows what happened to the rest. Finally, Red has get rid of the Biomancers' control and now enjoys his days as an employ of Lady Hempist. Or at least he did, upA justified and warranted ending to a thrilling trilogy by Skovron.
An incredibly underrated, well-written political fantasy. If you like your fantasy light on the romance, heavy on the characters and world-building, and creative in its stance on race, colonialism, technology, and even gender roles, then pick this one up. I, for one, can't wait to see what Skovron comes up with next.

As this story picks up, Red has taken control over his darker side; his shadow side that was put there by the biomancers who used him to
A whimpering finale to a good series. There were a lot of chances to up the tension with back and forths, snatching victory from the jaws of defeat, but instead, every single time, the author chose to take the easy way out. A fleet of ships attacking? No problem, the Kraken is now a good guy, so have him deal with the fleet. Two battalions of fresh enemy troops attacking? No worries, reanimate the recently (and easily) defeated monsters to handily wipe them out. Finally, the Big Bad Biomancer
Good ending. However I preferred the first half of the book.
I'm going to repeat what I've been saying: I really wish I liked this series more - it felt like it had the right ingredients, but something about it didn't work. Was it, for example, how easy things seemed to be? When Red and Brigga face the kraken, they realise that (view spoiler)[Fitmol Bet, the biomancer controlling it, is Brigga's old teacher - and is on their side. They then get to co-operate with the kraken (hide spoiler)]. It feels like we're reading an epic - but the narration doesn't
