Commentary In Favor Of Books Le combat ordinaire (Le combat ordinaire #1)

3.25* I wanted to like this book more, especially since it deals with finding passion in one's work and life and committing to the life you're in. But I'd say it's more of a dude's story. I recognize that getting high and being immature was a way to deal with anxiety and probably post traumatic stress from his job but it made it difficult to attach to the character... Yet I feel his naivete and pain when he discovers that his friend isn't who he thought he was and his neighbor was exactly who heMarco is disturbed by the images he's taken as a war photographer and moved to the French countryside with his troublesome cat to re-find himself. He's plagued by anxiety and panic attacks. He often wanders the countryside and befriends an old man while repeatedly getting into with another neighbor who considers him a trespasser. I wasn't a big fan of the art, but I did like the humor of the book.Received a review copy from Europe Comics and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
*2.5 Stars*I was provided an ARC via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.I didnt really dislike this. But I didnt really like it either. It seemed to me like it had no beginning nor ending and I couldnt relate to the main character. I found him annoying. I felt like there was no conflict in this, it just felt flat to me.Basically, it wasnt for me.
Deep and profound graphic novel from France which has thought provoking in and topical insights on art (how do we differentiate between art and the artist?), politics (why would working class vote for the ultra right), along with poignant observations on family, friendship, memory and redemption. A true slice of life classic from France that deserves multiple reads.
This contains the first to parts of Larcenet's Ordinary Victories, translated into English from the original French. The stories are about a photographer who has problems with anxiety. He's also sick of his work lately and feeling generally lost and lonely. Meeting his brother for some "big fat joints" and video games seems to bring some happiness into his life, but not much else seems able to produce that effect. After his cat gets a minor injury, he meets an interesting female vet with whom he
Marco does his best to escape the working-class world of his family by becoming a photographer/war journalist (it's not entirely clear to me). But, during the course of the story, he stops traveling, stops taking pictures of the horrors of war, and starts doing some soul searching. It is as if he got on a ship just to go somewhere else and by the time he stops running and looks around to see where he is, he realizes he's in uncharted territories (and doesn't speak any of the local languages.) He
I really really liked this book since it's a perfect example of a good slice-of-life comics with a European comics feel. It's this type of graphic novel where you can compare it to a book - it's not fast, very deep and the characters are well written.
