For psychology buffs. How ACT came to be, some challenges to conventional theories.
This book and this method are helping me a lot. I did not expect that. I got the book from Library Thing Early Reviewers as an advance copy. Nothing else really interested me on their list that month so I figured, "Why not?" I do see it for what it is, which is lots of good, proven ideas from different sources, put together as one by one psychologist and packaged as a new idea. I get that. However, it's working for me. The author succeeds in giving a thorough understanding of his brain-child, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and references multiple studies that attest to its effectiveness. Its also full of exercises meant to help one gain psychological flexibility. I didnt take the time for most of them, but theyre interesting. ACT draws from the authors background in psychology, as well as some meditation and mindfulness practices. The
From the start, reading of this book feels good. The words give hope and motivation to get up and do what matters. There is so much depth in the simplicity of its message. Yes, to be free sounds simple. Still, if you ever tried to be truly free, you know its the hardest thing. This book gives you map to freedom. Freedom to choose love in the world of fear. Steven Hayes is both scientist and a poet.
There is some solid advice here about incorporating mindfulness and working toward one's values in achieving relief from depression and anxiety. However, there is also oversell on the effectiveness of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. I am guessing that, just as with every other new therapy promised to be the best, at the end of the day, ACT, like all the others, will show the same outcomes.
