The First Promise is a translation of Ashapurna Debi’s novel, Pratham Pratisruti, originally published in Bengali in 1964. Celebrated as one of the most popular and path-breaking novels of its time, it has received continual critical acclaim: the Rabindra Puraskar (the Tagore Prize) in 1966 and the Bharitiya Jnanpith, India’s highest literary award, in 1977. Spanning the late eighteenth and early twentieth centuries, Ashapurna tells the story of the struggles and efforts of women in nineteenth-century, colonial Bengal in a deceptively easy and conversational style. The charming eight-year old heroine, Satyabati is a child bride who leaves her husband’s village for Calcutta, the capital of British India where she is caught in the social dynamics of women’s education, social reform agendas, modern medicine and urban entertainment. As she makes her way through this complex maze, making sense of the rapidly changing world around her, Satyabati nurtures hopes and aspirations for her daughter. But the promises held out by modernity turn out to be empty, instigating Satyabati to break away from her inherited world and initiate a quest that takes her to the very heart of tradition.

Indira Chowdhury’s confident translation, with its conscious choice of Indian English equivalents over British and American colloquialisms, carries across the language divide the flavour of Ashapurna’s unique idiomatic style. A fighter for truth and her search for the meaning of a Woman's life. Her struggle to educate her daughter and the protest when she is thwarted in this by her husband and mother in law. A strong and courageous character who we all admire but would rather not have in our own families.

গত সাতটা দিন একদম মোহাচছননের মত ডুবেছিলাম বইটায পডতে গিযে অনুভব করছিলাম আমি যেন ঠিক আমিতে নেই, চলে গেছি সেই আঠারো উনিশ শতকের নিতযাননদপুর, বারুইপুর বা কোলকাতার সমযটাতে লেখিকা আশাপূরণা দেবী তাঁর সুনিপুণ লেখনীতে সেই সমযকার সমাজের অবসথা বিশেষ করে নারীদের অনতঃপুরের চিতরটা এত চমৎকার করে ফুটিযে তুলেছেন যে চোখের সামনেই যেন সমসতটা দেখতে পাচছিলাম, হৃদয দিযে অনুভব করতে পারছিলাম বরতমান একবিংশ শতাবদীতে এসে আমরা নারীরা আপাতদৃষটিতে আজ অনেকখানি এগিযে আমরা আজ অনতঃপুর থেকে বাইরের জগতে পা রেখেছি, উচচশিকষায শিকষিত

আমি আসলে ভাষা হারিযে ফেলেছি বইটা পডা শেষ করে কী বলবো সেটা মাথার মধযে সাজানো নেই, সাজানোর জনয বিনদুমাতর কালকষেপণ করে review বিলমবিত করার ইচছা হয নি বলে এখনই লিখছিসে যুগের মেযেরা যে কী লেভেলের অসূরযমপশযা ছিলেন, এটা না পডলে হযত একটু কম জানতাম সেই যুগ পার হযে এই যুগে আসতে মেযেদের মনোভাবে যে কী বড একটা পরিবরতন (বিবরতন, উননতি) এসেছে সেটা ভেবে অবাক হযে যাচছি সে তুলনায পুরুষজাতির পরিবরতন হযেছে খুব সামানযই :| এটাও অবাক করার মত বিষয খুব ইচছা করছে চরিতরগুলো নিযে একটু কথা বলতে, কিনতু আমি চাই না যে পডে নি

পরথম পরতিশরুতি নামটা দেখেই সেই সদয টীন এজ লাইফের কথা মনে পডে গেল আশাপূরনা দেবীর সাথে এই পরথম পরিচয বই শেষ হযেছে ঠিকই কিনতু মতবিষকে রেশ রযেগেছে ঠিকই ইদানিং আর রিভিউ লিখতে ভাল লাগে না আমার সতযবতীর জনযে একটি লাইন না লিখলে নয "এতো আলো পৃথিবীতে, তবু পৃথিবীর মানুষগুলো এতো অনধকারে কেন?"

আপাতত ঘোরের মধযে আছি ঘোর কাটলেই রিভিউ লেখার দুঃসাহস দেখাবো পারব কী না জানি না সুবরণলতা পডার জনয মন আনচান করছে কিনতু হাতের কাছে নেই কেমনডা যে লাগে 😈
